VOLLEYBALL FALLS IN STRAIGHT-SETS TO WRIGHT STATE

Final

ROCHESTER, Mich.
— The Oakland women's volleyball program dropped a three-set decision to the visiting Wright State Raiders (14-25, 18-25, 20-25) Tuesday evening inside the Athletics Center O'rena. The Golden Grizzlies fell to 2-2 in Horizon League play with the loss, while the Raiders improved to 4-0 to remain atop of the conference standings.

As a team, Oakland was limited to a season-low .124 hitting percentage. Freshman outside hitter Patti Cesarini paced the Golden Grizzly offense with a team-high 12 kills. It marked the fourth-straight match Cesarini notched double-digits kills. Brittany Welch contributed with 10 kills while Jamie Walling tallied seven kills at a team-best .241 clip. Madison Ross (18 assists) and AnnaBelle Tomei (11 assists) combined for 29 of OU's 32 assists.

Defensively, Lindsay Wightman extended her streak of 10 or more digs to 17 matches, as she came away with a team-best 28 on the day. Katelyn Johnson and Walling chipped in double-digit digs with 12 and 10, respectively.

Wightman and Tomei each recorded one service ace, while Cesarini led the team with two blocks.

The Golden Grizzlies scored the first point of the opening set thanks to a kill by Madison Ross. The 1-0 advantage did not last long, as the Raiders got in front 8-3 and coasted to a 25-14 set victory.

Similar to the first set, WSU opened strong with a 10-3 lead in the second. However, Oakland answered back with an 11-6 run to minimize its deficit to two points, 16-14. The Raiders widened their lead with five-straight points and won comfortably, 25-18.

OU looked its best in the following set, as they maintained the lead for the majority of the set. The Golden Grizzlies held a 14-9 advantage following a kill by Jessica Reidl, but WSU outscored OU 16-6 for the remainder of the set to clinch the series sweep. Cesarini and Welch led the way with five kills each in the match-deciding set.

Oakland will have a chance to bounce back on the road at Cleveland State (Feb. 15-16) next week for a pair of HL matches.
