Daniel Oladapo's career night of 25 points and 20 rebounds was not enough, as Robert Morris stunned the Oakland men's basketball team 88-82 in double overtime Friday night inside the UPMC Events Center.
Oladapo recorded career highs in points and rebounds in the loss. The junior shot 8-of-11 from the field, including an impressive 9-of-12 from the free throw line. Six of his game-high 20 boards came on the offensive end.
Rashad Williams paced the OU guards with 22 points on 7-of-23 shooting. Six of his seven makes were from behind the arc.
Micah Parrish added in 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting along with six rebounds to round out double-figure scorers for the Golden Grizzlies (8-16, 8-9 HL).
Jalen Moore led the team with 10 assists but struggled with a 2-for-17 shooting clip.
Oakland crashed the glass by outrebounding RMU (4-9, 3-9 HL) 48-38 overall and 19-10 on the offensive end. The rebounding effort led to 13 second-chance points compared to 10 for the Colonials.
Robert Morris forced 21 turnovers to plague the OU offense. Fifteen of Oakland's turnovers transpired in the second half and overtime periods. OU's defense returned the favor by causing 17 RMU turnovers. The Golden Grizzlies turned those takeaways into 21 points on the offensive end of the floor. Moore, Williams, and Townsend tied for the team lead in steals with two.
The Golden Grizzlies started strongly to a 27-20 advantage with 7:51 left in the first half. RMU closed the period on a 6-0 run, but OU still entered halftime with a 40-37 lead.
Oakland kept its lead intact before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Oladapo's layup, to grow the lead to 50-41 with 15:15 to go in the contest. The Golden Grizzlies controlled their lead, as they were in front 69-61 at the 4:22 mark following another 3-pointer by Williams. The Colonials then fought back with a 10-2 run to even things up at 71-71 and send the game to overtime. It marked RMU's third-straight game going to an extra period.
Both offenses struggled in the first overtime going a combined 6-for-22 from the field. Robert Morris had an opportunity to win with the final possession of the period but missed on a jumper.
A layup by Williams closed OU's deficit to 84-82 in the second overtime, but RMU prevailed four unanswered points to win by a final score of 88-82.
The Golden Grizzlies will look to split the series tomorrow at 5 p.m. on ESPN3.
