OAKLAND’S WINNING STREAK ENDS AT BGSU, 73-72

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio — The Oakland men's basketball team fell 73-72 at Bowling Green on Tuesday night inside the Stroh Center. The road loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Golden Grizzlies.

The non-conference contest was a back-and-forth battle, featuring 12 lead changes and nine ties. Trailing 73-72 with 1.4 seconds left, second-year freshman Trey Townsend missed a layup at the buzzer, sealing the win for BGSU (5-4).

Graduate senior Jamal Cain led Oakland (7-3, 2-0 HL) with a team-leading 21 points to go along with nine rebounds, three steals, and two blocks. Junior point guard Jalen Moore posted 19 points and seven assists while also collecting a season-high six steals, just one shy of his career-best. Second-year freshman Micah Parrish had a season-best 15 points and 11 rebounds, good for his fourth-career double-double. Another second-year freshman in Trey Townsend struggled from the field with seven points on 2-of-9 shooting but tallied six rebounds and a team-high three blocks.

OU turned a season-high 22 turnovers by Bowling Green into 26 points but lost the rebound battle 48-35. The Falcons also led OU 18-14 in rebounding on the offensive end.

The Golden Grizzlies got off to a fast start, using an 11-0 run to lead 11-2 at the 14:25 minute mark of the first half. The nine-point lead was the largest of the night on either side. BGSU answered back with a 10-0 scoring spurt to take a 15-14 advantage with 11:54 to go in the period. The Falcons extended their lead to 26-21 following a jumper by Chandler Turner, who finished with a game-high 23 points on 7-of-9 shooting.

Oakland responded with 10 unanswered points to retake a 31-26 edge. Parrish highlighted the run with a 3-pointer, steal, and dunk in a 15-second span. Townsend helped extend Oakland's lead to 38-31 following a layup and free throw at the 2:14 minute mark. Bowling Green outscored OU 7-3 for the remainder of the half, resulting in a 41-38 Golden Grizzly lead heading into the break.

OU shot an efficient 47-percent (15-of-32) in the first half, led by Cain, who was a perfect 3-of-3 from deep en route to 13 points. Parrish was impressive with 11 points and six rebounds, while Moore totaled four of Oakland's eight steals in the period.

BGSU got in front 53-48 at the 14:27 minute mark of the second half. However, Oakland evened the score at 53-all following a layup by Parrish. Neither team led by more than three points for the following eight minutes, resulting in a 62-all tie with 6:28 to go.

The Falcons went ahead 69-64, but Moore came up clutch with consecutive 3-pointers to get Oakland back in front, 70-69, with 2:34 remaining. Bowling Green then made one final push with a free throw and 3-pointer to go up 73-70 at the 36-second mark. Moore reduced OU's deficit to 73-72 with two free throws, but the Golden Grizzlies could not convert on a last-second layup attempt, clinching a home victory for BGSU.

The Golden Grizzlies have a full two weeks to prepare for their final non-conference game of the season against Michigan State at Little Caesars Arena on Tuesday, Dec. 21.
