
ROCHESTER, Mich. — The Oakland University volleyball program opened its road slate with a three-set loss at Green Bay (16-25, 17-25, 12-25) on Thursday evening inside the Kress Center.
Fifth-year senior
Lindsay Wightman paced the Golden Grizzlies (15-10, 9-5 HL) with a match-leading 18 digs to go along with six assists and a service ace. Redshirt freshman
Patti Cesarini led the OU attack with five kills and added seven digs. Redshirt freshman
Anna Nie totaled a match-leading four blocks, while senior
Jessica Riedl was close behind with three blocks.
The Phoenix (12-15, 7-8 HL) outperformed Oakland in nearly every category including kills (51-to-19), assists (49-to-16), digs (49-to-40), and aces (9-to-3).
Green Bay opened the Horizon League contest with a 25-16 set victory. The period was close at 15-13 in favor of the Phoenix, but GB then went on a 6-0 run to build a 21-13 lead, which proved too much for the Golden Grizzlies to overcome.
The Phoenix continued to hold the momentum in the following set, racing out to a 6-1 advantage. Oakland inched back and got within one, 15-14, after a 4-0 run. However, GB took the next five points to extend its lead to 20-14 and finished the set in front, 25-17.
Oakland jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the third set, but Green Bay answered back with a 10-3 run, resulting in a 12-7 edge. The Phoenix stayed in front for the remainder of the set to clinch a home sweep.
The Golden Grizzlies will continue their road slate tomorrow at UIC. First serve from the Flames Athletic Center is set for 7 p.m. ET.
