VOLLEYBALL SWEPT AT UIC

CHICAGO — The Oakland University volleyball program endured a sweep at UIC (21-25, 24-26, 8-25) on Friday night inside the Flames Athletic Center.

The Golden Grizzlies (15-11, 9-6 HL), who were down two key setters, hit .092 with 21 kills and 13 errors in the Horizon League matchup. Meanwhile, the Flames (14-11, 10-3 HL) avenged their loss earlier in the season to Oakland by hitting .321 with 49 kills on 45 assists.

Senior Jessica Riedl had her first double-double of the season with 11 digs and 10 assists. Graduate senior Jamie Walling paced the attack with a team-high seven kills and added four blocks defensively. Fifth-year senior Lindsay Wightman tallied a team-leading 15 digs in the losing effort, while redshirt freshman Kennedy Dolmage had a strong outing with a career-high three service aces.

The opening set between Oakland and UIC featured nine ties and eight lead changes. The period was knotted up at 20 apiece following a service error by the Flames. However, UIC closed the set on a 5-1 run to go up 1-0 in the match. Walling led the Golden Grizzlies with three kills and two blocks in the period. Dolmage had two of her three aces in the set as well.

The following set was tightly contested, with neither program leading by more than four points for the entirety of the period. OU appeared to be on its way to set win with a 23-21 advantage, but UIC answered late by tying the period at 23-all and finishing in front, 26-24. Wightman was at her best with nine digs in the set, while Walling had four kills to lead the offense.

The Flames won big in the third set, 25-8. Oakland was limited to a -.087 hitting percentage, while UIC hit .567 with 19 kills and just two errors.

The Golden Grizzlies will close their regular-season road schedule on Sunday at Milwaukee. First serve is set for 3 p.m. ET.
