
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Graduate senior Jamal Cain had a double-double with a career-high 31 points and 10 rebounds, but it was not enough, as No. 14 Alabama rolled to a 86-59 win over the Golden Grizzlies on Friday night inside the Coleman Coliseum.Â
Cain shot 10-of-23 from the field and 9-of-11 at the charity stripe in the loss. He also matched a season-high in steals with three. Second-year freshman Trey Townsend contributed with eight points and five rebounds, while another second-year freshman in Micah Parrish scored seven points and added four rebounds.
As a team, Oakland (2-2) was limited to 30-percent shooting (19-for-63) and just four 3-point makes on 23 attempts (17%). Despite grabbing 12 offensive boards, the Golden Grizzlies were outrebounded for the first time this season, 51-35. Alabama (4-0) also led the game in points in the paint (38-24), second-chance points (21-12), and fast-break points (12-2).Â
The non-conference matchup was close early on, as the Golden Grizzlies trailed 12-11 at the 13:09 minute mark of the first half following a 3-pointer by Cain. 'Bama responded with a 10-2 run to go up 21-13 with 10:41 to go in the period. The Crimson Tide later used a 5-0 scoring spurt to extend their lead to double-digits, 26-15, at the 7:57 minute mark.Â
Parrish hit a 3-pointer to reduce OU's deficit to 30-22 with 3:22 remaining, but 'Bama quickly regrouped with six-straight points and went into the break on top 38-26.Â
The Crimson Tide caught fire in the second half with 48 points while holding the Golden Grizzlies to 33. Alabama opened the period with five consecutive points to increase its edge to 43-28 with 19:02 left. The nationally-ranked home team later used an 11-0 run to extend their advantage to 63-38 at the 10:57 minute mark. Oakland trailed by 20 or more points for the remainder of the contest, resulting in a 86-59 loss.Â
The Golden Grizzlies turn their focus to the Gulf Coast Showcase in Estero, Fla. Oakland will open the multiple-team event (MTE) against Vermont on Monday, Nov. 22, at 1:30 p.m. ET.
