STILLWATER, Okla. — The Oakland men's basketball team upset Oklahoma State on the road by a final score of 56-55 on Friday night inside the storied Gallagher-Iba Arena.Â
The Golden Grizzlies (1-1) were down 55-54 with just 33 seconds remaining in the non-conference matchup following a jumper by OSU's Bryce Thompson. In the next possession, Oakland's
Jalen Moore drew a foul on a 3-pointer, converting on two of the three throws to retake a 56-55 advantage with eight seconds to go. The Cowboys (1-1) got off a 3-point attempt with a second left, but it fell short, clinching Oakland's first win over a Power 5 program since Clemson during the 2016-2017 season.Â
Graduate senior
Jamal Cain posted his third career double-double in the win with 14 points and a team-leading 12 rebounds. Moore had a game-high 16 points to go along with six assists and three rebounds. Moore scored 11 of his 16 points in the second half, going 6-of-7 from the charity stripe in the process. Second-year freshman
Trey Townsend scored in double-figures for the second-straight game with 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including a 2-for-4 clip from 3-point range. Another second-year freshman in
Micah Parrish contributed with six points, five rebounds, and two steals.Â
Oakland's defense caused havoc by forcing 18 turnovers and outrebounding the home squad 35-31. To add, the Cowboys shot just 17-percent (3-of-17) from outside the arc.
OU was behind 15-10 at the 10:17 minute mark of the first half. However, the Golden Grizzlies closed the period on a 20-7 run, highlighted by an 8-0 spurt, to head into the break ahead 30-22. Cain did the chunk of his work in the opening half, as he tallied 10 points and eight rebounds.Â
Oklahoma State stormed back in the second half, tying the contest at 32-all with 16:23 to go. The Cowboys then went up 41-37 at the 13:25 minute mark following consecutive layups and maintained a four-point edge, 53-49, with five minutes remaining.Â
The score was still at 53-49 in favor of OSU with under two minutes left. Moore took over from that point forward by scoring Oakland's final seven points on a 3-pointer and four free throws. The Golden Grizzly defense limited the Cowboys to just one basket in the span en route to a 56-55 win.
The Golden Grizzlies will be back in action against Toledo on Wednesday, Nov. 17, for their home opener.
