Strong second half pushes Green Bay past Oakland

Daniel Oladapo

GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Green Bay Phoenix (3-9, 3-5 HL) used a strong second half to defeat the Oakland men's basketball team, 87-78, on Saturday evening inside the Kress Center.

All five Golden Grizzly starters scored in double-figures in the conference loss. Rashad Williams led the way with a team-high 20 points, which included six 3-pointers. Jalen Moore scored 15 points and dished out 10 assists for his third double-double of the season while Daniel Oladapo was just shy of a double-double with 18 points and eight rebounds. Trey Townsend and Micah Parrish rounded out the starters with 13 and 10 points, respectively.

A balanced scoring attack and stout defense helped Oakland (3-12, 3-5 HL) to a 45-38 advantage at halftime. The Golden Grizzlies shot 60-percent (18-of-30) overall, 44% (4-of-9) from outside the arc, and 5-of-5 from the free throw line in the first period. Williams steered the visiting Grizzlies with 14 first-half points on 4-of-6 shooting from 3-point land. Oladapo made his presence known in the paint with 11 first-half points and four rebounds. Moore tallied eight assists compared to just one turnover in addition to his eight points.

Meanwhile, Green Bay was held to 40% (12-of-30) shooting in the half and was outrebounded 17-to-12. Townsend challenged the Phoenix inside with two blocks.

Oakland extended its lead in the second half, as they were in front 55-45 at the 15-minute mark. However, Green Bay answered back with a 22-3 run to not only even the score but take the lead, 64-57, with 8:20 remaining in the contest. Oakland shot 1-of-11 (9%) in the stretch.

Two consecutive makes got the Golden Grizzlies within two (64-62) at the 7:47 mark but the Phoenix responded with a 12-2 run, which was too much for Oakland to overcome.

Green Bay's duo of Amari Davis and Josh Jefferson scored 28 of their combined 44 points in the second half to lead the comeback. The Phoenix increased its shooting percentage to 47% (32-of-67) due to a 54% clip (20-of-37) in the second period.

Oakland was just 33% (10-of-30) in the period and lost the second-half rebound margin 25-to-17.

The Golden Grizzlies return to the O'rena to host the Youngstown State Penguins next weekend on Jan. 15-16. Both games will air on ESPN3.
