
CINCINNATI - The Oakland baseball team held leads in both games but could not hold on dropping a pair of seven inning games, 11-5, 5-4, including another in walk-off fashion on Sunday at Marge Schott Stadium.
Bobby Cavin went a combined 2-for-7 with two RBI while
Michael Stygles hit 3-for-4 with two runs and posted his first career home run.
Ian Cleary also hit his first career triple.
Drew Demumbrum also hit 3-for-4 with a double, RBI and a run scored while
Blake Griffith hit second home run of the season with a pair of RBI and runs.
Trailing 4-3 entering the bottom of the seventh inning of the second game, Stygles hit a lead off home run tying the game at 4-4. Demumbrum doubled and moved over to third off a ground out.
Jordan Jackson hit a deep fly ball to right field in which Demumbrum tagged off the sacrifice fly giving Oakland a 5-4 lead. However, the Cincinnati manager questioned that Demumbrum left the base early. After a discussion among the umps, they determined he did leave early and was ruled out on the play for the third out. The Bearcats then loaded the bases and got the game-winning RBI single to left field earning their second walk-off win of the series.
Oakland took a 1-0 lead as Griffith struck out swinging but reached first off a wild pitch that allowed
Mario Camilletti to score. Griffith's homer in the third inning gave the Golden Grizzlies a 2-0 lead. Cincy responded to take the lead with three runs in the bottom of the frame and added another in the fourth to move ahead 4-2.
Tyler Trovinger added a RBI single to pull Oakland within a run at 4-3 in the sixth.
On the mound,
Matthew Nolin tossed 4.0 innings with four strikeouts in the no-decision effort.
In the first game,
Beau Keathley picked up the loss going 3.2 innings with six strikeouts
Oakland got on the board first in the third inning with two outs as Griffith hit a RBI single to center field to score Camilletti. Demumbrum followed single up the middle to plate Griffith. Cavin then stepped up with the bases loaded and delivered a two-run single giving the Golden Grizzlies a 4-0 lead. Cincinnati got their first run of the game off a RBI double in the bottom of the frame.
Things turned south in the fifth inning for the Golden Grizzlies as the Bearcats got a solo home run to cut the lead in half at 4-2. With the bases loaded, they added another run off a hit batter followed by a two-run single to gain the lead. An ensuing bases loaded walk capped off a six-run inning.
Cincy added for more insurance runs in the fifth inning to take a commanding 11-4 lead.
Cleary's triple came in the seventh inning to score Stygles.
Oakland opens Horizon League play at UIC on Friday, March 13 at 5 p.m.
