ROCHESTER, Michigan - Oakland University men's basketball ran away late for its third-straight victory, knocking off Milwaukee, 75-68, at the O'Rena on Friday, February 21. Senior forward
Xavier Hill-Mais recorded his second double-double in as many games and eighth of the season to lead the Golden Grizzlies.
For the seventh-straight game, Oakland eclipsed the 70-point mark. The Golden Grizzlies hadn't scored at least 70 in consecutive efforts since the streak began on Jan. 25 against IUPUI.
Hill-Mais, coming off the Nike #HLMBB Player of the Week honor, went for 23 points and 11 rebounds. It was the Greensboro, North Carolina, native's fourth-consecutive 20-plus point effort. The eight double-doubles is two behind the league leaders at 10 - IUPUI's Elyjah Goss and Loudon Love of Wright State.
Sophomore forward Daniel Oladapo recorded the third double-double of his season - pulling down 11 boards to go with 12 points. Oladapo had 10 boards last time out, marking the first time as a Golden Grizzly he has notched back-to-back double-figure rebounding games.
Sophomore guards Rashad Williams and Tray Maddox Jr. rounded out Oakland's double-figure scorers with 16 and 11, respectively. Williams extended his three-point streak to 10 games, matching the team's longest streak set earlier in the year by Maddox Jr. Williams finished with four triples.
The Golden Grizzlies built a double-digit lead, 69-59, with 2:35 to play. Milwaukee cut the deficit to four with just over a minute to play, but Oakland knocked down the free throws late to claim the decision.
Oakland used a 12-1 run over 4:21 of game play leading into the four-minute media to retake the lead, 64-59. The Panthers went 0-for-6 from the floor over the stretch while Oakland was 4-of-4. Milwaukee's scoring drought lasted more than three minutes.
Maddox Jr. regained the lead for Oakland, 52-51, out of the under-12 media timeout, utilizing his pivot to go up and under the defender for the layup. The lead was short lived though, as the Panthers came back down with a three-pointer from the corner.
Milwaukee pushed its edge out to four on multiple occasions over the first eight minutes of play in the second half, but the Golden Grizzlies kept coming up with answers to keep it a one possession affair.
Much of the first half was played within a possession - with no side building more than a seven point edge over the first 20 minutes. Hill-Mais led Oakland with 12 points in the first frame.
Williams gave the Golden Grizzlies their largest lead of the first half, 17-10, with his 40th triple in 10 games. Milwaukee responded though once again and thanks to an 8-0 run shortly after took its first lead of the contest, 21-19.
Oakland started on a quick 5-0 run before the Panthers clawed their way back into it, 7-5, heading into the first media timeout.
