ROCHESTER, Michigan - Oakland University men's basketball completed the weekend sweep, holding off Youngstown State's late rally, 72-64. Senior forward
Xavier Hill-Mais led all scorers with 20 points as he recorded his seventh double-double of the season.
This afternoon's win marked the first time since November 9-10 that the Golden Grizzlies won consecutive games. Additionally, Oakland built a double-digit lead at home in back-to-back outings for the first time since December 21 and December 28 against Fairfield and Detroit Mercy.
Hill-Mais has scored 20 or more points in three-straight games and five of the last eight. His five helpers were a season high to go with his game-high 11 boards. Sophomore guard Tray Maddox Jr. hit double digits, finishing with 12 points. Maddox Jr. dished out a career-high seven assists while turning the ball over just once in 39 minutes of action.
Sophomore guard Rashad Williams knocked down four triples as he tallied 17 points. Williams has multiple three-pointers in every game as a Golden Grizzly.
Junior guard Kevin Kangu rounded out Oakland's four double-figure scorers with 14, nine of which came in the second half. Kangu's 14 were the most since pouring in 20 against UTSA on November 9. This afternoon was his second double-digit point effort since the start of conference play - scored 13 at Cleveland State on January 11.
Sophomore forward Dan Oladapo was active on the glass, grabbing 10 boards. His season high of 12 came on November 18 against Hartford. Oladapo has three double-figuring rebounding efforts.
Oakland held its opponent to under 40-percent from the floor for the ninth time this season as the Penguins shot 37-percent for the game. The Golden Grizzlies knocked down 26-of-54.
Darius Quisenberry led YSU with 14 points and Naz Bohannon grabbed 11 rebounds.
Oakland headed into the final 1:37 up 18, but a 9-0 Youngstown run that took up just 51 seconds brought the edge to single digits, 66-57.
The Golden Grizzlies took their first double digit lead at 41-31, with 15 minutes to go on a senior center Brad Brechting slam - he finished with four points . Oakland hadn't led at home by double figures since December 28 against Detroit coming into this week. Against Cleveland State on Thursday, the Black and Gold led by as many as 12. Against the Penguins this afternoon, the lead reached a height of 18.
Williams came out of the break and tallied a quick six points within the first four minutes of the second half to push the Golden Grizzly edge to eight.
Oakland closed the first half on a 9-2 run over the final 3:36 to take a 31-24 lead into the half. Maddox Jr. had 10 to lead all scorers at the break, marking his third double-figure game in the past six.
The Golden Grizzlies, leading by as many as nine, went through a three minute drought - allowing the Penguins to claw their way back with a 9-0 run, tying the game at 22-22.
Oakland used a 17-2 run with four different Golden Grizzlies scoring to surge out to a 22-13 lead over the Penguins with under seven minutes to play in the opening half. YSU scored just one bucket in 10:10 of action.
Williams and Maddox Jr. combined for a pair of Oakland three's to retake the lead, 13-11, as part of an 8-0 run. The Golden Grizzlies held YSU scoreless for more than two minutes.
The two sides exchanged the lead back and forth over the first four minutes of play before back-to-back triples by the Penguins built an 11-5 deficit for the Golden Grizzlies heading into the first media timeout.
Oakland concludes its home regular season next weekend as the Golden Grizzlies welcome Milwaukee and Green Bay on Friday, February 21, and Sunday, February 23, respectively. Sunday's matchup will be Senior Day, celebrating the careers of Hill-Mais and Brechting.

The grouping is 2-1 as the starting five and has comprised 93-percent of Oakland's scoring over the past two outings heading into this afternoon's matchup. Against Youngstown, the starters went for 56 of Oakland's 72 - 78 percent.
- The three-point streak was extended to 997 by Tray Maddox Jr. early in the first half. The last time Oakland did not convert a shot from behind the arc was on Jan. 30, 1988 vs. Wayne State University. The Golden Grizzlies have hit a three-ball in 997-consecutive games, which is the fifth-longest streak in the NCAA.
- Oakland hit 70 or more points for the sixth-straight game. The Golden Grizzlies hadn't scored at least 70 in consecutive efforts since the streak began on Jan. 25 against IUPUI.
- Rashad Williams - playing in his ninth game as a Golden Grizzly - has knocked down multiple three-pointers in every outing - setting a career high first with seven against Detroit on Jan. 31 and eight at NKU on Feb. 6. The Detroit native ranks second all-time in Cleveland State single-season history with 91 three-pointers a year ago. Williams has 39 in his eight games this season.
- 39 of Williams' 55 made field goals this season have come from behind the arc.
- Xavier Hill-Mais finished with 20 points - marking his 23rd-straight outing with double-digit points and 26th this season. It was the 21st 20-plus point effort of his career and third straight. The 20 points and 11 rebounds marked his 7th double-double of the season.
- Oakland is 65-22 in the month of February since 2009. In eight of those seasons, the Golden Grizzlies have won at least six games in February.
- Since Williams was granted his waiver, Oakland's scoring has gone up 6.0 ppg. For the first time this season, the Golden Grizzlies have scored 70 or more points in six-straight outings.
- Tray Maddox Jr. had 10 points before the break to lead all scorers. Maddox Jr. finished with 12. It is his third double-figure game in six outings.

Oakland defeated Alabama A&M in the Opening Round before falling to North Carolina. The 2010 Oakland squad won the Summit League regular season and tournament title. The Golden Grizzlies won 26 games - going 17-1 in conference play. Senior point guard Johnathon Jones led all Division I players in assists. Oakland fell in round one of the NCAA Tournament to Pitt.
