Jalen Moore led the Oakland men's basketball team Saturday night, scoring 25 points, but it wasn't enough as the Golden Grizzlies fell to UIC, 74-72 in the Horizon League opener from Credit Union 1 Arena.
Moore went 9-19 from the floor, adding six rebounds, and five assists.
Trey Townsend and
Daniel Oladapo also finished in double digits highlighted by a career-best 17 points from Townsend, and his first double-double of the season for Oladapo, scoring 15 points and pulling down 18 boards.
Townsend went 7-of-13 (54%) from the field, adding eight rebounds, three blocks, and two steals.
Oladapo went an impressive 70 percent (7-10) from the floor en route to his best game of the season recording season bests in points (15) and rebounds (18).
The Golden Grizzlies never trailed in the first half and headed into halftime with a 40-34 advantage.
After a triple from the Flames gave UIC its first lead of the game at 49-47, UIC garnered its largest lead of the game up five, 52-47. Oakland regained the lead by going on a 13-0 run over the next seven-plus minutes.
Another UIC triple at the 2:26 mark, tied things up 68-all. With 40 seconds left to play,
Zion Young was fouled, splitting a pair of three throws with Oakland trailing 70-69.
Rashad Williams, who was held without a field goal all game, hit his first of the game, a triple with 8.3 on the clock, to put Oakland within one, 73-72.
Oakland fouled on the inbound play with seven seconds left, as UIC split the pair and sealing the game at 74-72.
Moore had one last attempt but his shot was blocked as time expired.
Saturday's game marked the first loss for Oakland at UIC in program history, and just the second loss in a Horizon League opener since joining the conference.
Oakland continues league play tomorrow at UIC with tip-off scheduled for 5 p.m. (ET) on ESPN+.
