ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Jalen Moore led the Golden Grizzlies for the fourth-straight game with 21 points as the Oakland men's basketball team fell to No. 25 Michigan, 81-71 in overtime Sunday night from the Crisler Center.
Moore struggled from the floor, converting on just 4-of-19 shots (21 percent), and 1-of-6 from long-range, but was able to get to the free throw line a game-high 13 times, with 12 of his 21 points coming from the charity stripe.
The junior was one rebound shy of a double-double and added six assists and two steals while drawing a game-high 12 fouls on the night.
Freshman
Trey Townsend had an impressive night, making an impact on both ends of the floor. The Oxford, Mich. native tallied a career-best 13 points (5-for-6), four boards and two steals.
Oakland (0-4) forced 20 turnovers, 15 coming in the first half, as the Golden Grizzlies scored 15 points off the Wolverines' miscues. Michigan's 20 turnovers were the most from any opponent since Oakland's season opener a season ago against Goshen (11/5/19) where the Maple Leafs also committed 20 turnovers.
The Golden Grizzlies trailed by as much as eight in the first half , but battled back from every deficit, tying things up at 29-all after
Daniel Oladapo secured an offensive board and hit a turnaround jumper with just over two minutes remaining.
Michigan (2-0) took the lead at 31-29 with just under a minute to play, but after a pair of free throws from Moore and a bucket from Townsend, Oakland headed into halftime with a 33-31 lead. It marked the first time this young season Oakland had a lead at the half.
Oakland led by as much as six a number of times throughout the second half, but wasn't able to run away with the lead.
The Golden Grizzlies were down 67-65 with 28 seconds left in regulation, as
Rashad Williams drew a foul sending him to the line for a 1-and-1 opportunity. Williams hit both free throws to deadlock both teams at 67.
The Wolverines had an opportunity to take the game, but missed a jumper outside the paint with one tick left on the clock.
It was all Michigan during overtime as Oakland was outscored 14-4, going 50 percent from the floor in the extra five minutes of play.
Oakland's tough non-conference schedule continues Tuesday, Dec. 1 at Purdue at 3 p.m. on the Big Ten Network.
