OAKLAND DROPS SEASON OPENER AT XAVIER

CINCINNATI, Ohio –The Oakland men's basketball team opened the 2020-21 season with a 101-49 loss to Xavier Wednesday afternoon from the Cintas Center in game one of the Xavier Invitational.
 
Kevin Kangu, Jalen Moore and Daniel Oladapo tallied eight points each to lead Oakland. 
 
Moore hit a free throw followed by a triple from Blake Lampman on the next possession to give Oakland a 4-2 lead just two minutes into the first half. It was all Xavier (1-0) after that, going on a 20-0 run over the next 5:40. A baseline jumper from Yusuf Jihad ended the Musketeers' run after taking a 22-6 lead. 
 
A pair of free throws and a bucket by Oladapo, and a layup from Trey Townsend rounded out the scoring efforts for the Golden Grizzlies, heading into halftime trailing Xavier, 53-12.
 
The Golden Grizzlies had a better second half offensively, shooting 33.3 percent from the floor compared to just 12 percent (4-of-33) in the first 20 minutes of play. 
 
Xavier was hot from floor shooting 60 percent (43-of-71) from the floor and nearly 40 percent from long range, hitting 13 triples.
 
Oakland will continue the Xavier Invitational Thursday against Toledo at 3:15 p.m. Fans can watch live on FloHoops or listen on 106.7 WLLZ HD-2 or the iHeart Radio app.
