Box Score | Highlights

ROCHESTER, Michigan -
Oakland Men's Basketball and IUPUI needed extra time to determine a winner on Saturday, January 25, at the O'Rena. The Golden Grizzlies ran out of answers late, falling 89-85. Senior forward Xavier Hill-Mais led five Golden Grizzlies in double figures with 20.

Hill-Mais notched his fourth game of the season with 20 or more points and 18th of his career. The Greensboro, North Carolina, native finished with eight rebounds.

Senior center Brad Brechting pulled down 13 rebounds to go with 10 points for the fourth double-double of his season.

Sophomore guard Rashad Williams turned in a season-high 18 points, knocking down five triples. Thirteen of his 18 made field goals this season have come from range. Freshman guard Blake Lampman is the only other Golden Grizzly to hit five three-pointers in one game. Lampman accomplished the feat back on November 30 at Toledo, going 5-of-10.

Lampman led Oakland (7-15, 2-7 HL) with 12 points at the break - highlighted by three field goals from three-point land. The Haslett native would finish with 12 points on the afternoon. Tray Maddox Jr. rounded out the Golden Grizzlies' double-figure performers with 11 - going 3-for-4 from beyond the arc in the second half.

Junior guard Kevin Kangu matched his career high in assists, dishing out nine helpers. Kangu finished with six points and zero turnovers. As a team, Oakland committed just seven turnovers - this afternoon was the first outing the Golden Grizzlies committed fewer than 10 turnovers in a game on the season and the fewest since last year's season opener against Toledo (four turnovers).

Oakland's 85 points were the most in a single-game since the season opener on November 5 - the Golden Grizzlies put up 94 on Goshen.

The Jaguars' (6-16, 2-7 HL) offense ran through Marcus Burk and Jaylen Minnett. The guard-duo combined for 69 of IUPUI's 89 points. Burk finished with a game-high 39, as Minnett had 30. Elyjah Goss entered the day as the Horizon League's leading rebounder at 11.24 boards per game. Goss pulled down a game-best 18 rebounds.

With 3:45 to play in overtime, Kangu knotted the game, for what would be the final time, at 78-78. The Jaguars came down with an answer, as Minnett hit his sixth three-pointer of the game. Despite a Hill-Mais bucket on the ensuing possession, Burk once again traded an Oakland two for an IUPUI triple - pushing the deficit back to four.

Williams cut it to a one possession game, 88-85, with seven seconds remaining, but a free throw on the other end sealed the game.

The Jaguars led for more than 38 minutes of game action but couldn't pull farther away than seven. The game had six lead changes and nine ties.

Next up for Oakland is part two of the Metro Series. The Golden Grizzlies make the 26-mile trek to Detroit Mercy on Friday, January 31. Tipoff is set for 7 pm from Calihan Hall on ESPN3. Oakland took the first matchup of the season on December 28, 78-69, for a program-record sixth-straight win over the Titans.

Notes
  • Freshman guard Blake Lampman made his second start of the season - first since Dec. 7 at Bowling Green. Lampman was joined by Williams, Maddox Jr., Brechting and Hill-Mais in the starting lineup. Williams and Brechting are the lone Golden Grizzlies to start every game they have dressed for this season  - Williams since becoming eligible on Jan. 16. Last time Lampman started, he played 36 minutes and went for six points against the Falcons.
  • Brad Brechting's 10 points marked four-straight outings for the Cedar Springs native with double digits. Brechting tallied a season-high 26 points at Green Bay on Jan. 16. Brechting has put together consecutive double-digit efforts three times this season - this is the first stretch of four-straight games this year. He tallied 10 or more points in 12-straight games a season ago - a streak that started on Jan. 24, 2019, against IUPUI.
  • Oakland has had at least three scorers in double figures in 10-straight outings. The Golden Grizzlies have had five double-digit scorers three times this year. The last time the Golden Grizzlies had just one double-digit scorer was against No. 16/15 Michigan State on Dec. 14.
  • For the first time this season, Oakland committed fewer than 10 turnovers as a team. The last time Oakland committed fewer than 10 turnovers was at Youngstown State on Jan. 31, 2019 - the Golden Grizzlies turned it over just nine times against the Penguins. The seven turnovers this afternoon is the lowest since giving up just four in last year's season opener against Toledo on Nov. 9, 2018 - Oakland committed just four turnovers in the effort.
  • Kevin Kangu matched his career high with nine assists. Kangu dished out nine helpers on Nov. 10, 2019, against Southern Illinois. Kangu leads the team with 81 assists on the season.
  • Rashad Williams has hit a triple in every appearance this season. In just four games since being granted his transfer Waiver, the Detroit native has knocked down 13 triples. Thirteen of his 18 made field goals this season have come from beyond the arc.
  • The 85 points by Oakland is the most since scoring 94 against Goshen in the season opener on Nov. 5, 2019. This afternoon's game was just the second time this year the Golden Grizzlies have gone for 80 or more in a game.
  • Oakland is 0-2 in overtime games this season - lost to Fairfield on Dec. 21, 61-59. Both contests were played at the O'Rena.
  • The three-point streak was extended to 992 by Blake Lampman. The last time Oakland did not convert a shot from behind the arc was on Jan. 30, 1988 vs. Wayne State University. The Golden Grizzlies have hit a three-ball in 992-consecutive games, which is the fifth-longest streak in the NCAA.
  • Blake Lampman has hit at least one three-pointer in seven-straight games and at least three triples 10 times this season. Tray Maddox Jr. had the longest three-point streak of the team this season, putting together 10-consecutive efforts with a triple.
  • Xavier Hill-Mais finished with 20 points - marking his 18th-straight outing with double-digit points and 21st this season.
