WILLIAMS’ 37 POWERS OAKLAND TO SEVENTH-STRAIGHT IN METRO SERIES, KNOCKING OFF DETROIT MERCY 77-64

The Golden Grizzlies knotted the all-time series against Detroit Mercy with a 77-64 victory in Calihan Hall on Friday, January 31.

DETROIT, Michigan - Sophomore guard Rashad Williams dropped a career-high 37 points to highlight Oakland's program-best seventh-straight victory in the Metro Series, knocking off Detroit Mercy 77-64 in Calihan Hall on Friday, January 31. 

Four Golden Grizzlies finished in double figures. Senior forward Xavier Hill-Mais went for 12 points, missing the double-double by one rebound. Senior center Brad Brecthing notched his fourth double-double of the campaign, grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds to compliment his 11 points. In the last four outings against the Titans, Brechting has hauled in 12, 10, 9 and 12 rebounds.

Sophomore forward Daniel Oladapo rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points - his first double-digit effort since January 3 against Wright State. 

Williams' 37 points was a career high and first 20+ point performance since January 26, 2019. The seven triples was a new season high and matched his career high originally set on Dec. 16, 2018 at Illinois State. Williams is the first Golden Grizzly to score 30 or more points since Brechting put up 32 against Youngstown State in the O'rena on Feb. 1, 2019. 

With four helpers tonight, junior guard Kevin Kangu has dished out 13 assists over the last two outings while committing zero turnovers. Kangu's assist/turnover ratio in the month of January was 3.5 - 28 assists, 8 turnovers. 

Detroit's Antoine Davis went for 26 points on 9-of-25 shooting. Davis was 4-of-14 from range. Justin Miller and Dwayne Rose Jr. contributed 15 and 13 points, respectively, off the bench for the Titans. 

Oakland (8-15, 3-7 HL) knots the all-time series with Detroit (6-17, 4-6 HL) at 13 apiece, extending its win streak to a program-best seven over the Titans. The last loss the Golden Grizzlies suffered in Calihan Hall was on January 10, 2015. 

With 2:09 on the clock, Brechting found open space in the paint and was fouled - ruled a flagrant. In the discussion following the play, Detroit Mercy received a technical, giving Oakland four free throw shots and the ball to extend the lead to a game-high 18, 75-57. 

The Titans cut their deficit to six with 8:22 to play, marking the closest the game had been since 11-6 with 14:29 to play in the opening half. 

Foul trouble became a concern early in the second half, as Brechting subbed out with four personal fouls not four minutes into the half, and Hill-Mais picked up his fourth with 14:02 to play. 

For the fifth-straight road contest, the Golden Grizzlies jumped out to an early double-digit advantage. Oakland held Detroit scoreless for 4:40, building an 8-0 lead before the Titans found the scoring column. A triple from Williams put the Black and Gold up 16-6 at the 13:46-mark. The edge was pushed out to a high of 15 in the first 20 minutes. 

Detroit's Chris Brandon - who hauled down 18 rebounds in the first meeting this season on December 28 at the O'Rena - picked his his third foul with nine minutes to play in the first half. Brandon finished with two points and five boards. 

Davis tallied 12 first-half points on 4-of-11 shooting. Last time the sides met, Davis went 1-of-8 in the first 20 minutes for nine points - going 6-of-6 from the free throw line. 

The nine-point margin at half was the largest at the break since taking a 46-26 lead to the locker room against the Titans on December 28. Davis cut the edge to nine with a triple with 1:06 to play in the half.

  • Blake Lampman made his second-straight start and was joined by Xavier Hill-Mais, Rashad Williams, Tray Maddox Jr. and Brad Brechting. The 10th starting combo for the Golden Grizzlies this season combined for 71 points last time out against IUPUI on Jan. 25 - the highest tally by an Oakland starting five this season.
  • The three-point streak was extended to 993 by Blake Lampman two minutes into the contest. The last time Oakland did not convert a shot from behind the arc was on Jan. 30, 1988 vs. Wayne State University. The Golden Grizzlies have hit a three-ball in 993-consecutive games, which is the fifth-longest streak in the NCAA.
  • Oakland held Detroit scoreless for 4:40 to start the game, jumping out to an 8-0 lead. 
  • In each of the past five road games, the Golden Grizzlies have jumped out to a double digit lead in the first half: +15 at Detroit, +10 at Milwaukee, +15 at Green Bay, +12 at Cleveland State, +13 at Youngstown State. The Golden Grizzlies took a lead into half in four of the five outings: +9 at Detroit, +3 at Green Bay, +3 at Cleveland State, +4 at Youngstown State, -4 at Milwaukee. Oakland is 2-3 over the last five road games. 
  • Blake Lampman has hit at least one three-pointer in eight-straight games and at least three triples 10 times this season. Tray Maddox Jr. had the longest three-point streak of the team this season, putting together 10-consecutive efforts with a triple.
  • Rashad Williams - playing in just his fifth game as a Golden Grizzly - has knocked down multiple three-pointers in every outing - his previous season high was five against IUPUI on Jan. 25. The Detroit native ranks second all-time in Cleveland State single-season history with 91 three-pointers a year ago. 
  • The nine-point margin at half was the largest since taking a 46-26 lead to the locker room against the Titans on December 28. 
  • Xavier Hill-Mais finished with 12 points - marking his 19th-straight outing with double-digit points and 22nd this season.
  • Brad Brechting's 11 points marked five-straight outings for the Cedar Springs native with double digits. Brechting tallied a season-high 26 points at Green Bay on Jan. 16. Brechting has put together consecutive double-digit efforts three times this season - this is the first stretch of five-straight games this year. He tallied 10 or more points in 12-straight games a season ago - a streak that started on Jan. 24, 2019, against IUPUI. 
  • Oakland has had at least three scorers in double figures in 11-straight outings. The Golden Grizzlies have had five double-digit scorers three times this year.The last time the Golden Grizzlies had just one double-digit scorer was against No. 16/15 Michigan State on Dec. 14.
  • In the last four outings against Detroit, Brad Brechting has hauled in 12, 10, 9 and 12 rebounds.
