ROCHESTER, Mich. --
Xavier Hill-Mais notched a double-double by scoring 13 of his 17 points in the second half and grabbing 11 rebounds as the No. 3 seed Oakland men's basketball team defeated No. 6 seed Youngstown State 88-84 Wednesday night at the O'rena in the Horizon League Tournament Quarterfinals.
Hill-Mais also added four assists, two blocks and one steal.
Jaevin Cumberland scored a game high 23 points on 4 of 7 shooting from three-point range. Cumberland has made a three-pointer in every game this season.
Tray Maddox Jr. scored 19 points and grabbed five rebounds as Oakland improves to 7-2 when he scores in double figures.
Brad Brechting recorded his fifth career double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds. The redshirt junior is averaging 17 points and 10 rebounds in his last 10 games.
Braden Norris added 10 points and a game-high seven assists.
Oakland held Youngstown State scoreless for the first five minutes of the game, but the Penguins bounced back and took their first lead later in the first half at 5:44 to go up 24-22.
Oakland got to the free throw line early and often while locking down defensively, shooting 17 free throws in the first half compared to zero for the Penguins. The Penguins did not shoot a free throw until 15:41 in the second half. Overall, Oakland made 32 free throws on 45 attempts, both season highs.
Down 34-30 at halftime, YSU started to heat up from beyond the arc, shooting 10 of 18 from three-point range in the second half. However, Oakland made plays when it mattered and never surrendered its lead to pull out its fifth straight win.
Oakland will advance to the Horizon League Tournament Semifinals for the second consecutive season and take on No. 2 seed Northern Kentucky Monday, March 11 at 9:30 p.m. on ESPNU.
