DETROIT -- Jaevin Cumberland scored 27 points and tied a career high with seven three-pointers as the No. 3 seed Oakland men's basketball team fell in the Motor City Madness semifinal, 64-63, to No. 2 seed Northern Kentucky on a late three-pointer Monday night at Little Caesars Arena.
Cumberland made a three-pointer in every game this season and hit five or more treys in seven games.
Xavier Hill-Mais recorded his sixth double-double of the season with 11 points and 14 rebounds.
Brad Brechting pulled down 10 rebounds and recorded a career high five blocks.
Braden Norris added nine points and dished out a career high 12 assists, while
Tray Maddox Jr. scored eight points and grabbed a career high eight rebounds.
Oakland jumped out to a 16-5 run in the opening five minutes of the game, hitting six of its first 10 shots. The Golden Grizzlies extended their lead to 17 at 28-11 with 9:28 in the first half.
However, Northern Kentucky stormed back by closing out the final 9:28 of the half on a 26-9 run, while Oakland did not hit a field goal in the last 3:24 as the score was tied 37-37 at the break.
The Norse took its first lead at 16:19 in the second half with a Drew McDonald layup to go up 43-41.
Oakland struggled to make shots in the second half, shooting just 29 percent (8 of 27) and had a near 10-minute stretch without a field goal from 13:11 to 3:35.
Down 61-50 with 4:07 to play, Oakland went on a 13-0 run to take a 63-61 lead with 10 seconds remaining after a pair of Cumberland free throws.
The next and final possession, McDonald hit the game-winning three-pointer with four seconds left to play. It was NKU's lone three-pointer of the second half (1 of 7).
The loss snapped Oakland's five-game winning streak.
