CHICAGO - Nick Parr was solid on the mound allowing five scattered hits with six strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work in game one while
Mike McGee and
Mario Camilletti each recorded three total hits with
Myles Zilinsky adding two as Oakland dropped a doubleheader at UIC, 3-1 and 7-2, to open Horizon League play on Saturday in the Windy City.
In addition to Parr's effort in the game one pitcher's duel,
Cameron Fuller went 2.0 innings in relief with two strikeouts. McGee and Camilletti each went 2-for-3 and 2-for-4 respectively while
Blake Griffith and
Clay Thompson each recorded a double as Oakland (0-16, 0-2 HL) could not get any offense going against UIC (5-8, 2-0 HL) starter Jacob Key who allowed only four hits in 7.1 scoreless innings with five strikeouts.
Consequently, two of UIC's eight total hits proved to be the difference as the Flames connected on a two-run home run in the third inning and added a solo shot in the eighth for a 3-0 lead.
With one out in the ninth, Griffith hit a double to get runners into scoring position at first and third.
Ryan Fitzgerald got Oakland on the board with a RBI groundout to score
Drew Demumbrum cutting the lead to 3-1. However, UIC's Alex Padilla was able to get the last out to pick up the save.
In the nightcap, Oakland got on the board first in the top of the third inning as Zilinsky scored off a throwing error.
Matt DiLeo added a RBI groundout which plated McGee giving Oakland a 2-0 lead.
UIC responded with a run in the third and three more in the fourth to move ahead for good at 4-2. The Flames increased their lead to 7-2 with runs in the sixth and seventh while holding the Golden Grizzlies scoreless over the final six innings.
