WESTON, Fla. --
Thomas Giroux won both of his matches 3 & 2 as the Oakland men's golf team completed day one of the A10 Match Play Championship hosted by George Washington Monday at Weston Hills Country Club.
The Golden Grizzlies faced George Mason in their first match of the day as
Sean Niles won his match 4 & 2 while
Marc Norton won 2-up in addition to Giroux's win. The match finished tied at 3-3 but Oakland won the tiebreaker of total holes won 9-8 to edge out George Mason and advance in the championship bracket.
In the second round, the Golden Grizzlies squared off against George Washington and fell in a tightly-contested match, 3.5-2.5, with
Chris Handy winning the other Oakland match 4 & 2. Norton finished all-squared with his opponent to earn 0.5 points.
Oakland will begin the third and final round of competition tomorrow against St. Bonaventure in the third-place match at 8:22 a.m.
