Clay Thompson hit a two-run homer as the Oakland baseball team dropped a 21-9 season opening decision at Western Carolina on Friday.
After missing last season,
Matt DiLeo returned going 1-for-3 with a two-run single while
Drew Demumbrum went 2-for-5 with two runs.
Jordan Jackson and
Ronnie Krsolovic each added a RBI.
Errors doomed Oakland from the start as WCU took a 6-0 lead in the first inning all with unearned runs.
The Golden Grizzlies battled back in the second inning with seven runs off McGee and DiLeo's two-run singles and Thompson's two-run shot to take a 7-6 lead. However, the Catamounts responded with three runs and three unearned runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good.
Due to weather conditions, both teams will complete the series with a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 16 beginning at noon.
