- Oakland is 26-1 all-time against non-Division I teams in the O'rena.
- The Golden Grizzlies return redshirt-senior and First Team All-Horizon League selection Xavier Hill-Mais who averaged 18.3 points and 7.2 rebounds per game in 2018-19.
- Brad Brechting also returns for his redshirt-senior campaign. The 6-11 center appeared in all 33 games, making 27 starts last season, and averaged 13.4 points and 6.9 rebounds per game in league play.
- Head coach Greg Kampe enters his 36th season at the helm of the Golden Grizzlies and is the third-most tenured active coach at one school behind Duke's Mike Krzyzewski (40 seasons) and Syracuse's Jim Boeheim (44 seasons).
- Oakland added 10 newcomers to the 2019-20 squad, including three transfers in Kevin Kangu (Vincennes University), Daniel Oladapo (Chipola College) and Rashad Williams (Cleveland State).
- Oakland was picked to finish fourth in the 2019-20 Horizon League Men's Basketball Preseason Poll. The Golden Grizzlies finished the 2018-19 season in third place with a 16-17 overall record and an 11-7 league record.
- Hill-Mais earned preseason accolades, being named first team all-league.
