Men's Soccer Senior Reflections
ROCHESTER, Mich. - Luke Morrell scored the game-winning goal just 44 seconds into the second half off an assist from seniors
Evan Sawula and
Elliott Bentley giving Oakland a 1-0 win over Michigan State for the first time since 2014 in front of the fifth largest crowd of 1,672 on Senior Night at the Oakland Soccer Field. Senior
Liam McQueenie picked up the shutout making two saves in his second start in goal this season.
After a scoreless first half, Oakland (7-6-2) put the ball in play to open the second half as Bentley took the ball down the left side and fed it up to Sawula just inside the box. Sawula then turned and floated a left-footed cross over to Morrell who went unmarked behind the MSU (3-8-3) back line and put the volley away giving the Golden Grizzlies a 1-0 lead.
The Spartans turned up the pressure but the back line anchored by McQueenie stood tall to preserve the shutout.
Prior to the match, the team honored seniors Bentley,
Corentin Diverres,
Adam Giorgio, McQueenie,
Spencer Nolff, Sawula and
AJ Shaw for their hard work and dedication to the program. In addition, they also honored Team IMPACT member
Alex VanHolder.
