ROCHESTER, Mich. --
Jaevin Cumberland scored 24 of his 26 points in the second half including six three pointers as the Oakland men's basketball team dropped its first league game of the season to Wright State 89-73 Saturday inside the O'rena.
Xavier Hill-Mais scored 16 points on 7 of 11 shooting while
Karmari Newman had 13 points, his seventh double-figure performance in his last nine games.
Wright State (8-9, 2-2 HL) started the game on a 14-3 run and capitalized on 11 first half turnovers by Oakland, scoring 10 points off those turnovers.
Oakland (7-10, 3-1 HL) shot just 19 percent (3 of 16) from three-point range in the first half and trailed at halftime 40-29.
In the second half, Oakland shot 7 of 14 from three point range, as Cumberland hit six treys on his own.
After a 13-2 run, Oakland was able to cut the Wright State lead to 60-50 with 9:15 to play.
Hill-Mais picked up his fifth foul moments later with 8:58 remaining and Wright State went on a 16-7 run as the Golden Grizzlies could not complete the comeback.
Oakland will return to action on Jan. 10 against Milwaukee at home on ESPN+.
