CHICAGO -- Xavier Hill-Mais recorded his second consecutive double-double with 20 points and a career high 13 rebounds as the Oakland men's basketball team cruised past UIC 80-67 Saturday.
Hill-Mais already had a double-double at the half, recording 10 points and 10 rebounds and has tallied a career high in rebounds in back-to-back games. The redshirt-junior also had a season high four blocks and dished out four assists.
Five Golden Grizzlies scored in double figures as
Karmari Newman scored 17 points and was 3 of 5 from three-point range.
Tray Maddox Jr. netted 15 points and dished out a career high five assists.
Jaevin Cumberland added 13 points, five rebounds and five assists, while
Brad Brechting notched 11 points. Oakland is now 5-1 when Brechting scores in double figures.
Oakland (10-12, 6-3 HL) was dominant defensively, holding UIC to 38 percent shooting (23 of 61) from the floor, its lowest allowed in league play this season.
Oakland, which did not allow a three-pointer in the first half, also held UIC (10-12, 4-5 HL) to just 11 percent shooting (2 of 18) from beyond the arc, its lowest percentage and three-pointers allowed this season.
Oakland held a three-point advantage before closing out the first half on a 20-7 run to take a 37-21 lead at halftime.
The Golden Grizzlies never surrendered the lead in the second half and improve to 4-1 on the road in league games this season.
The win also preserves Oakland's perfect record at UIC as the Golden Grizzlies are now 8-0 all-time against the Flames in Chicago.
Oakland will return to Rochester for a pair of home games next week against Youngstown State on Jan. 31 and Cleveland State on Feb. 2.
