Karmari Newman recorded a career high 19 points, five rebounds and two assists as the Oakland men's basketball team escaped with a 87-86 road win at Fairfield Thursday night. Newman also was 3 of 4 from beyond the arc.
Jaevin Cumberland had 17 points and was 4 of 8 from three-point range while also adding five assists. Cumberland was 5-for-5 from the free throw line and has now made his last 26 straight free throws.
Xavier Hill-Mais scored 21 points on 9 of 12 shooting and
Braden Norris added nine points while dishing out a game high nine assists.
Oakland (4-5) held on to a one-point lead heading into halftime at 43-42, then opened the second half with a 17-2 run in the first four minutes of play. The Golden Grizzlies shot 65 percent (13 of 20) from the floor and were 5-for-10 from three-point range in the second half.
With 16.3 seconds remaining in the game, the Golden Grizzlies stopped Fairfield (2-7) on its final possession to hang on for the win in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
Oakland will continue its road trip by taking on Northeastern Saturday, Dec. 8 at 4 p.m. in Boston.
