Karmari Newman hit the game-winning three pointer with 22 seconds left in regulation and
Brad Brechting scored a career high 19 points as the Oakland men's basketball team earned a 76-74 road win at Youngstown State Sunday afternoon.
Brechting shot a career best 7 of 9 from the floor and was also 5 of 5 from the free throw line, plus grabbed five boards. Oakland is 4-0 this season when Brechting scores in double figures.
Tray Maddox Jr. scored in double figures for the third time in four games with 10 points and shot a career best 6-for-6 from the free throw line. The freshman guard is averaging over 11 points per game since Dec. 18.
Xavier Hill-Mais recorded 16 points and six rebounds while
Jaevin Cumberland added 13 points and hit three treys.
Newman scored 11 points in total and was 3 of 3 from beyond the arc.
Youngstown State took its first lead with just under 10 minutes in the second half via a 10-2 run. Cumberland's layup at 9:28 gave Oakland the lead again. YSU regained the lead with 2:28 left in the game and held the lead for over two minutes until Newman hit the game-winner with 22 seconds on the clock.
The win marks the second time Oakland has started 2-0 in Horizon League play since joining the conference in 2013-14, with the other being the 2016-17 season. Oakland has won 10 of its last 13 matchups against the Penguins.
The Golden Grizzlies will return home for a four-game home stand beginning Thursday, Jan. 3 against first-place Northern Kentucky at 7 p.m.
