ATHENS, Ga. -- Tray Maddox Jr. got his first career start and scored a career high 12 points as the Oakland men's basketball team dropped a hard-fought road contest at Georgia 81-69 Tuesday night at Stegeman Coliseum.
Xavier Hill-Mais led all scorers with 21 points and tied a career high 9 rebounds.
James Beck also added nine rebounds, five of which came on the offensive glass.
Jaevin Cumberland scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half including four three-pointers and
Braden Norris scored 13 points, including a trio of three-pointers plus grabbed a career high five rebounds.
The Golden Grizzlies got off to a slow start offensively going 1 of 10 from the floor to start the game. The Bulldogs went on a 19-3 run midway through the first half, but Oakland countered by making six of its final eight field goals and trailed 45-34 at the half.
The Golden Grizzlies gave Georgia trouble by scoring 23 points on 15 Georgia turnovers.
Oakland cut the Bulldogs' lead to 66-64 after a Hill-Mais layup at the 4:56 mark in the second half, but Georgia's Nicolas Claxton put down a dunk with 4:34 left to play as Georgia outscored Oakland 13-5 the rest of the game to pull away.
The Golden Grizzlies will face another Power-5 opponent next as they travel to No. 8 Michigan State Friday, Dec. 21 at 7 p.m.
