ROCHESTER, Mich. --
Brad Brechting recorded a career high 17 points, seven rebounds and four three-pointers as the Oakland men's basketball team defeated James Madison 77-69 Friday in day one of the Men Against Breast Cancer Oakland Hoops Challenge at the O'rena.
Braden Norris also recorded a career high with 12 points and was perfect from the floor going 3 of 3, including 2 of 2 from beyond the arc and 4 of 4 from the free throw line. Norris also handed out five assists and recorded three steals.
Xavier Hill-Mais scored 16 points and pulled down five rebounds while
Jordan Nobles scored 10 points and dished out five assists.
Jaevin Cumberland and
James Beck each added nine points. Beck grabbed five rebounds while Cumberland recorded four assists and no turnovers.
Oakland, who coming into the contest led the Horizon League in assists per game, recorded 22 assists on 26 made baskets. Going into the second half with a 38-31 lead, the Golden Grizzlies shot 55 percent from the floor (12 of 22) and 50 percent from the three-point line (6 of 12). Oakland also shot a season best 88 percent from the free throw line (15 of 17).
The Golden Grizzlies will return tomorrow for day two action of the tournament, taking on former Summit League rival Oral Roberts at 2:30 p.m. on ESPN3 and TV20.
