KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Darya Maltseva picked up a No. 4 singles win in straight sets over Valeria Riegraf (7-6, 6-2) and teamed up with Alexandra Whall to secure a win at the No. 2 doubles position over B. Eristavi/G. Slavova (6-3) as the Oakland women's tennis team fell 5-2 at Western Michigan in the spring season opener on Saturday.

Whall also won at No. 3 singles over Denise Azcui in straight sets (6-4, 6-3). After winning at the No. 2 doubles slot, the Golden Grizzlies were close to securing the doubles point but came up short falling in tie breakers at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions.

Oakland resumes play on Saturday, Feb. 10 at Toledo.
