Jan. 24, 2017 ROCHESTER, Mich. - The two-time defending Horizon League champion Oakland men's soccer team entered the 2016 season looking for the three-peat but had their impressive run ended in heartbreaking fashion by No. 1 seed Wright State in a shootout during the conference tournament semi-finals.
TEAM HIGHLIGHTS
â-ª Oakland stunned the No. 2 ranked team in the nation Akron with a 1-0 home shutout in an exhibition match (8/15)
â-ª The Golden Grizzles defeated arch-rival Detroit Mercy, 2-1, (9/21) for the sixth consecutive season earning a third consecutive Metro Series Driven by Trinity Transpiration win over the Titans
â-ª The Black and Gold defeated Dayton, 1-0, on Homecoming weekend. The Flyers defeated the Golden Grizzlies in penalty kicks in the 2015 NCAA College Cup opening round
â-ª Oakland finished the season second in the league with 14 goals
â-ª Oakland's defense recorded three shutouts
â-ª With a conference record of 5-4-0, the Golden Grizzlies earned the No. 4 seed in the Horizon League Tournament where they defeated beat Green Bay, 1-0, in the quarterfinals (11/7)
â-ª The Black and gold played Wright State to a 1-1 double overtime draw in semi-final action before falling, 6-5, in penalty kicks ending their bid for a third consecutive Horizon League Tournament title
INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS
â-ª Liam McQueenie was named Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week (9/17)
â-ª McQueenie lead the team in shutouts (2), ranked seventh in the league in save percentage (.776) and eighth with goal against average (1.08)
â-ª Chase Jabbori was named Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week (10/7)
â-ª Jabbori lead the team in goals (6) with a career-high in points (14) which was second on the team
â-ª Jabbori and Zach Walker both were named to the 2016 Fall Horizon League Academic All-League team
â-ª Walker made a career-high nine saves against Virginia Tech (9/24)
â-ª Nebojsa Popovic and Nyal Higgins were named to the Horizon League All-Freshman Team
â-ª Popovic ranked second on the team in points (11), third in goals (4) and assists (3)
â-ª Austin Ricci lead the team in points (15) assists (5), also ranked second on the team in goals (5)
â-ª Ricci and Higgins were each named to the 2016 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Great Lakes Regional Third Team
â-ª Connor Ballantyne, Hamid Barry, Ryan Goike, Alec Greene, Jabbori, Keenan King, Wes Mink, Popovic and Walker were named to the 2017 Spring Horizon League Honor Roll
