HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Nate Green threw 5.1 shutout innings and Matt DiLeo recorded two hits and two RBIs as the Oakland baseball team (2-8) defeated Southern Miss (7-6-1), 7-5, in game two of a three-game series Saturday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park.
"We made quite a few mistakes early which dug us a hole," said head coach John Musachio. "The men showed incredible emotional resilience to regroup and play extremely well the rest of the way. The four-run seventh inning featured three two-strike hits. Our guys really battled. On the mound both Collin (Gee) and Nate (Green) threw very well. Obviously it's even more impressive when a freshman closed out a game in a high pressure environment."
Green earned his first career win allowing no runs out of the bullpen with six strikeouts. Robby Enslen extended his hitting streak to 32 games with a single in the seventh inning.
Trailing 5-3 in the seventh inning, Oakland would score four runs to take the 7-5 advantage. Zach Sterry doubled home Enslen to start the inning, followed by Ian Yetsko scoring on a throwing error and DiLeo hitting a two-RBI single to left-center field.
Oakland scored first as Enslen plated Spencer Marentette with a groundball to the shortstop, but the Golden Eagles responded with a four-run third inning led by Dylan Burdeaux driving in two runs with a single to right field and Tim Lynch hitting a solo home run.
The Golden Grizzlies cut the lead to 4-3 in the fourth as Trent Drumheller drew a bases-loaded walk followed by Mike Brosseau hitting a RBI-single to the shortstop. USM scored its final run of the game in the bottom half of the inning as Burdeaux tallied his third RBI of the game with a single through the left side.
Oakland will look for the series sweep of Southern Miss on Sunday beginning at 2 p.m. at Pete Taylor Park.
