FLINT, Mich. ââ'¬" Oakland men's soccer standout and former two-time All-Horizon league selection Joey Tinnion has signed with the Detroit Waza Flo announced owner, coach and Oakland alum Dominic Scicluna. The Waza Flo is Michigan's only professional soccer team and member of the Major Arena Soccer League.
"This is a great opportunity for Joey that is well deserved", said Oakland head men's soccer coach Eric Pogue. "Joey grew up around the indoor soccer game so it is only fitting that he starts his professional career in Detroit with Waza Flo. As an Oakland alum, Dominic does a great job recognizing the top talent being developed by the Oakland soccer program. We are very excited to watch Joey begin his professional career and I know he will represent Oakland with pride, hard work and dedication."
"We're really happy Joey could join our team at this point in our season," added Scicluna.
Tinnion, a Macomb, Mich. native and two-year starter, recorded 17 goals, nine assists and 43 points in his four-year career for the Golden Grizzlies. During his senior year, Tinnion tied for the team lead with four goals and was an All-Horizon League first selection becoming the first player to garner league honors in consecutive years. Tinnion also helped Oakland capture its first-ever Horizon League regular season and tournament titles scoring a goal in the Golden Grizzlies' 2-1 win over Wright State in the championship game.
This season as an undergraduate assistant, Tinnion helped Oakland to back-to-back Horizon League Tournament championships. He will remain with the team as the graduate assistant in the fall.
