DETROIT - Kyla Kellermann scored her team-high fifth goal of the season to give Oakland (4-10-2, 2-3-1) a second half lead but it was not enough as the University of Detroit-Mercy (8-5-1, 5-1) rallied to a 2-1 double overtime victory on Wednesday afternoon at Titan Field. The Golden Grizzles and Titans are now tied with two points each in the Metro Series standings driven by Trinity Transportation. Alice Palmer and Joan Sieja combined for 12 of Oakland's 17 shots with five on goal. Defensively, Alison Holland made four saves and played 279:30 total minutes before allowing a goal.
"I am disappointed in the loss because I felt like we did enough to get three points but you have to commend UDM because they showed how resilient they are in the conference season to win games in overtime," said head coach Margaret Saurin. "I feel like we could have done a little more defensively to shut Sara Zawacki down and make both of her scoring shots more difficult to convert. At 1-1, I felt we certainly had more possessions and created more dangerous opportunities but we are not finishing those chances. With the last two games of the season, we have to find a way to put those opportunities in the back of the net and it has to be the difference between now and the end of the regular season. It does help that we are finishing the season at home where we play good soccer but we still have to convert on a more consistent basis."
Palmer had Oakland's best chance in the first half as she fired a free kick from the ride side that hit the crossbar in the upper left corner of the goal.
In the 67th minute of the second half, Palmer sent in a cross off a corner kick into the middle of the box. The ball deflected off a UDM player out to Kellermann who controlled it and fired a shot from just inside the 18-yard line box that beat Titan goalkeeper Marina Manzo to the right side.
UDM got the equalizer in the 79th minute as Sara Zawacki took a lose rebound off a feed and fired it past Holland.
Oakland had a great opportunity in the 84th minute as Vlad Gurovski broke in free down the right side, took a long feed and just missed with a shot to the low right side.
In the second overtime, Zawacki struck again taking a pass from Jennifer Borawski and scored on a shot to the right side to give UDM its fourth overtime win of the season.
The Golden Grizzlies return home to the Oakland Soccer Field for a match against visiting Cleveland State on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 7:00 p.m.
