ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies were edged out by the University of Toledo with a final score of 1-0 on Thursday at the Oakland Soccer Field.
The opening period began with Oakland setting up its defensive structure, as
Norah Schmidt took her position in goal. Toledo tested Schmidt with several shots, including a notable save on a bottom-center attempt by Amya Usher at the 32nd minute.
Oakland's offensive efforts included shots from
Olivia Mehl and
Lily Stevens in the early stages. The Golden Grizzlies briefly held a lead as
Olivia Norton slipped through for a goal, before the play was overturned and ruled offsides, resetting the game scoreless.
Adalyn Cameron delivered a close shot that was saved by Paige Dornheggen late in the period. However, the Rockets capitalized on their opportunities, with McKenna Schultz notching a goal in the 37th minute, assisted by Mikaela Perkins, ultimately giving Toledo a 1-0 lead at half.
The second period commenced with Oakland seeking to overturn the deficit. Early on,
Norah Schmidt made a crucial save against Ella Zoerhoff, maintaining the scoreline. Oakland increased its offensive pressure, with
Sophia Benavides and
Lilly Boebel both testing Toledo's defense, though Paige Dornheggen managed to keep the shots out.
Throughout the period, Oakland created numerous opportunities, including a notable attempt by
Sophie Schultz that narrowly missed the target. Despite consistent pressure, Oakland could not convert, with the period concluding without any additional goals and the Rockets holding on to win.
