Oct. 17, 2014 ROCHESTER, Mich. - The first-place Oakland men's soccer team (5-5-1, 4-0-1 Horizon League) will host Belmont (2-11, 0-4 Horizon League) in a Horizon League matchup on Saturday at the Oakland Soccer Field beginning at 7 p.m. The match can be seen live on ESPN3 as Oakland is one of the first Horizon League schools to broadcast on the ESPN platform with the voice of the Golden Grizzlies Neal Ruhl and legendary coach Gary Parsons on the call.
The Golden Grizzlies are riding a six-match unbeaten streak after earning a 2-0 road win over Milwaukee on Wednesday at Engelmann Stadium. Shawn Claud Lawson scored both goals in the victory and is now the team leader in both goals (3) and points (6). Matt Dudley and Gavin Hoy are each tied for second in points with five each, followed by Joey Tinnion with two goals.
Oakland earned its second-straight Horizon League's Defensive Player of the Week honor on Monday as Cody Archibald was awarded his first career weekly honor. Archibald leads the backline that has recorded four-straight shutouts and has not allowed a goal in over 399 minutes of action. Wes Mink won the award last week after earning his first two career victories and now ranks second in the league with a 0.84 goals-against average including allowing a league-best 2 goals in league play for a 0.37 goals-against average
Horizon League newcomer Belmont enters the match 0-4 in league play but earned a big non-conference victory over Georgia State on Oct. 7. First-year head coach Bryan Green, who brings a deep and accomplished resume to Nashville, helped lead Drexel and West Virginia to the NCAA Tournament. The Bruins are led by Nat Hubert and Diego Figueroa tied for the team-best two goals.
It is Camper Night at the Oakland Soccer Field as all Oakland soccer campers who wear their camp t-shirt will receive free admission.
