EAST LANSING, Mich. - Sophomore defender
Sarah Reynolds scored her first collegiate goal in Oakland's contest at Michigan State Thursday afternoon as the Golden Grizzlies battled to a 1-1 draw with the Spartans at DeMartin Soccer Complex.
"Overall, we possessed well and created a number of quality opportunities," said interim head coach Dave Morgan. "Everyone did their job very well today; we had a game plan and the players stuck to it."
Oakland had the statistical upper hand for the contest, posting advantages in shots (16-12) and shots on goal (10-4). The Golden Grizzlies' attack forced Michigan State goalkeeper Courtney Clem to make nine saves. On the other end, Oakland's Stephanie Bukovec tallied three stops in the contest.
Oakland out-shot the host Spartans with a 4-1 mark in shots on goal in the first half, but didn't have a tally to show for their efforts. That changed in the 61st minute, when Reynolds got on the end of a corner kick by Alice Palmer and a quick header-flick by Joan Sieja to give the Golden Grizzlies the 1-0 lead.
That advantage was short-lived, however, as Michigan State answered back just 1:05 later with a goal thanks to their own corner kick. The game featured 11 corner kicks, with four by Oakland.
In the span of six minutes early in the second half, Oakland ripped off a five-shot flurry, including three shots on goal. Meghan Reynolds and Kyla Kellermann had two shots apiece during the attack.
The tie was the second in as many outings in the series, which now stands at 7-2-2 in favor of Michigan State. Oakland moves to 1-3-1 on the season and will open the home portion of the 2013 season Sunday, Sept. 8 against Western Michigan.
