Kyla Kellermann's second-half goal tied contest in the 51st minute
DAYTON, Ohio - A goal by Kyla Kellermann in the 51st minute tied the Oakland women's soccer team at 1-1 against host Wright State Saturday afternoon, but after a weather delay in the game's 61st minute and an ensuing Wright State score in the 65th minute, the Golden Grizzlies dropped a 2-1 Horizon League decision to the Raiders. The loss was the third consecutive for Oakland, dropping the team to 4-7-1 overall, 0-2-0 in Horizon League play. Wright State improved to 4-4-3 on the year and 2-0-0 in League action.
"We controlled the tempo of the game right from the start, maintaining possession of the ball for the majority of the match," said Oakland interim head coach Dave Morgan. "Offensively we created a number of quality scoring opportunities, but could only put one into the back of the net. We need to do a much better job finishing the chances we create. Unfortunately on the other end we made two critical goalkeeper errors that allowed them to score."
Wright State scored in the 13th minute to take the early lead when a long free kick by goalkeeper Brooke McCurdy got past Oakland netminder Payj O'Shea. The 1-0 score stayed through the halftime break, where Oakland ratcheted up its offensive attack. The Golden Grizzlies proceeded to out-fire Wright State 10-6 in the second stanza and finished with a 13-7 advantage in shots.
Oakland shook the nets in the 51st minute when Kellermann made good on an assist by Joan Sieja to knot the contest. The assist by Sieja was her fifth of the season.
Miserable weather, which included hail and driving rain, brought unplayable conditions in the 61st minute when lightning was sighted in the vicinity. The game was halted until lightning cleared the area; however, upon the game's re-start, Wright State took a 2-1 lead in the 65th minute on an own goal by Oakland off a Raiders corner kick.
Oakland's O'Shea finished with four saves in the setback, while Wright State's McCurdey tallied six stops.
A three-game home stand awaits Oakland, starting Wednesday, Oct. 9 when the Golden Grizzlies look to get back to its winning ways against Valparaiso. First touch is slated for 7 p.m. ET.
