Oakland Falls 7-0 to Eastern Michigan in Season Opener

YPSILANTI, Mich.- Caitlin Young played No. 1 singles and was one of several players that had a strong showing, as the Oakland women's tennis team (0-1) fell, 7-0, to Eastern Michigan (1-1) in the season opening match at the Chippewa Racket Club on Saturday night.

"It was a good start to the season regardless of the score," said Oakland head coach Heather Redshaw. "We have things that we need to work on, but we also had some good points in every match."

The Golden Grizzlies took a point in each of the three doubles matches. Young and her partner, Grace Keating, had the strongest showing for OU with an 8-3 loss at No. 1 doubles. The hosts claimed the other two doubles matches by scores of 8-1.

In singles play, EMU took an early advantage and held on to complete the sweep. Young had the closest singles match of the day, falling 6-4, 6-2 to Miriam Westerink. Keating also fared well falling 6-2, 6-3 to Ankita Bhatia in No. 3 singles. Karen Karoub lost 6-1, 6-2 to Nino Mebuke at the No. 2 singles spot.

Freshman Brittany Baxter made her debut for Oakland, falling 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 5 spot. Caryn Kimmel fell 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 6 spot and Demi Georgakopoulos lost 6-0, 6-0.

The Golden Grizzlies continue to play on Wednesday when they travel to Michigan State for a match at 4 p.m.
