CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Freshman Grace Keating and senior Amanda Pettey won at No. 3 doubles, but it was the only victory for the Oakland University tennis team (3-6) in an 8-1 loss to Wayne State (14-7) on Saturday at Peachtree Tennis Club. The Golden Grizzlies played using the NCAA Division II rules, which count each doubles match individually.
The win by Keating and Pettey was the only win for Oakland in the match, as Wayne State rushed out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play. The Warriors claimed No. 1 doubles with an 8-6 win and won 8-4 at No. 2 doubles.
In singles play junior Demi Georgakopoulos had came close before losing 12-10 in a super-set tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets 6-2, 4-6 at No. 5 singles. Pettey also went to a super-set tiebreaker in her No. 6 singles match, losing 2-6, 6-0, 10-6.
The Warriors claimed straight set victories in each of the top two singles matches and also won in straight sets at the No. 4 spot to clinch the win. Junior Karen Karoub played a close first set at No. 3 singles, but was forced to retire in the second set.
Oakland returns to action on Monday with a match at Detroit starting at 2 p.m.
