CHARLESTON, Ill. -The Oakland men's soccer team (4-11-1, 1-3-0) faces a must-win Summit League match on Saturday at Eastern Illinois (7-6-1, 1-2-1) on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET at Lakeside Field. The Golden Grizzlies need a win to stay alive for a spot in The Summit League Championship.
"We know that we need to get a win against a strong side when we head down there," said Oakland head coach Eric Pogue. "We know it is no easy task, but we are 150% committed to achieving our goal of making the league tournament and this is the next hurdle we have to clear in order for that to happen."
Despite a second-half goal by John Timm, Oakland fell 2-1 to a tough Ohio State team in its final non-league match of the season on Wednesday. The Golden Grizzlies' Andrew Barrett came close with two late shots, but was unable to find the back of the net.
Jeff Cheslik continues to lead OU with four goals this season. Jake Przybycien has added three goals and Josh Bennett, Konner McNamara and Barrett each have two. Jon Evans, who assisted on Timm's goal against OSU, has a team-best five assists this season and ranks second in The Summit League.
The Panthers logged a midweek win over Western Michigan with goals from three different players. Jake Brillhart leads EIU with four goals this season and 10 points. Will Butler has three goals and five assists for a team-best 11 points. Mike Picinich and Garet Christianson have three goals each.
Oakland is 0-2-1 against Eastern Illinois, but the two teams have not since 1982. OU and EIU have not met since both teams became NCAA Division I teams
