ROCHESTER, Mich. - Senior Adrienne Leone notched a 14-kill effort, while sophomore Ashley Nevelle dished out 28 assists, but it was not enough for the Oakland University volleyball team (3-1) as the Wright State Raiders (3-1) hit .302 for the match to roll to a 3-0 victory over the Golden Grizzlies on Saturday at the Athletics Center O'Rena.
"Wright State did a great job keeping the ball in play and recognizing opportunities to score, and not creating errors on balls where they could score," said Oakland University head volleyball coach Rob Beam. "They took advantage of their kill opportunities and did a great job."
Wright State took a 25-17 win in the opening set, before claiming 25-22 and 25-19 victories in the second and third sets. The Raiders hit .302 for the match, and hit a match-high .371 in the final set. Shauna Sandifer led the Raiders with 11 kills on 18 swings, hitting .500 for the contest.
"She's a long, athletic player," said Beam. "She had a lot of balls that were hitting the top of the block and going out of bounds. When an athlete can do that, she's going to score points. I was very impressed with her ability to recognize when she was in a bad situation. She's a very impressive player."
Leone hit .150, but the Golden Grizzlies were led by sophomore Jenna Lange, who hit .188 with seven kills. Junior libero Brittany Dunn added 11 digs for the Golden Grizzlies.
Oakland will return to action Sunday, facing Canisius and North Texas on the final day of the Golden Grizzly Invitational. Canisius downed North Texas 3-2 in the tournament's opening match today.
"The biggest thing for us is to get back to being offensively consistent. I think we did a nice job of creating opportunities to score points. We just didn't convert, and made a lot of hitting errors. The difference tonight was we produced errors and they produced points. And when you do that, even with a great serve and pass game, the team with the better offense is going to win. Hopefully tomorrow we'll do a better job in the offensive phase."
