ROCHESTER, Mich. - Junior Katie Dreyer was a perfect 3-for-3, with a double, and sophomore Alison Tansel tossed 4.0 shutout relief innings, but UMKC senior Samantha Hurst tallied her first complete-game shutout, scattering four hits, to lead the Kangaroos (7-25, 2-10) to a 4-0 victory over Oakland University (10-18, 4-5) in the final game of the Summit League softball series on Sunday at the OU Softball Field.
Junior Angela Righetti had the only other hit for the Golden Grizzlies, finishing 1-for-3. UMKC's Danielle Bennefeld smacked a three-run home run to drive in three runs for the `Roos.
Senior Jessica Granger (7-8) took the loss, throwing 3.0 innings, allowing four hits, four runs, three earned runs and struck out two. Hurst fanned four batters and walked three for UMKC in the circle.
The game began with a mental error for the Grizzlies as the center fielder ran in on a line drive that went over her head and all the way to the fence as the Kangaroos' Kalene Curry had a triple. She then scored on a single by Kelly Fischer.
The `Roos tallied three more runs in the third inning on a walk, error and three-run home run by Bennefeld, her second of the season, to center field as the Golden Grizzlies went down four, 4-0.
OU continued to hit balls hard, but unfortunately they were directly at defensive players as they could not find a hole. The Golden Grizzlies stranded six base runners in the game.
Oakland had no runs, four hits and commitgted one error, while UMKC scored four runs, on seven hits and had no errors.
Despite the loss this afternoon, OU won its second league series of the season by sweeping the Kangaroos yesterday afternoon. The Golden Grizzlies improve to 4-5 in Summit League play and will host Southern Utah (13-17, 5-4) next Friday and Saturday, April 3-4.
