Softball Powers Way to Series Win over RMU

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies stayed dominant at home this season, finishing their series against RMU with a Sunday sweep, winning a pair of games behind timely big-time hits, as they moved to 10-1 at home and handed the Colonials their first conference losses.

GAME 2

The Golden Grizzlies roared to an 11-7 victory against Robert Morris University in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader. Oakland's explosive offense, highlighted by two home runs and a six-run first inning, set the pace for the rest of the game. This win handed RMU their first conference loss, marking a significant stride for the Golden Grizzlies.

In a game that saw Oakland overpower the Colonials, the first inning was a whirlwind of action. RMU jumped out with a five-run burst, featuring a three-run shot by Courtney Poulich and a two-run homer from Brant. But the Golden Grizzlies answered right back. Brooklyn Plitz led off with a single, setting the stage for Maggie Murphy and Addison Kopp to drive in runs, culminating in a six-run inning. Maggie Murphy's standout moment was her 100th career hit, achieved with a home run. The score was locked at 6-6 after the first inning.

Oakland took the lead in the fourth inning when Murphy sent one sailing over center field, making it 7-6. Autumn Liebhauser then widened the gap in the sixth with a powerful three-run homer, followed by Taylor Carraway's RBI double. Liebhauser's three RBIs were a season-high. By the end of the sixth, the Golden Grizzlies had stretched their lead to 11-6.

The Colonials made a final push in the seventh, adding another run, but Oakland held firm to claim the win. Final score: Golden Grizzlies 11, RMU 7.

Kenna Bommarito took over in the second inning, pitching 6 strong innings, allowing just 2 runs on 2 hits while striking out 7 and walking 3. Bommarito displayed stretches of dominance, retiring several innings without surrendering a hit.

Murphy notched two hits, including her homer, driving in one run and scoring twice. Liebhauser added a homer of her own, bringing in three RBIs and crossing the plate twice. Kopp delivered with two hits and two RBIs, scoring twice, continuing her streak of multi-hit games. Carraway contributed three hits and an RBI, including a double.

GAME 3

The Golden Grizzlies roared to a 6-3 victory over Robert Morris University to close out the series, thanks to a thrilling sixth inning that broke a tie and secured the win.

The Colonials drew first blood in the fourth inning when Facher doubled to left and scored on Poulich's single up the middle. But the Golden Grizzlies were quick to respond. Brooklyn Plitz singled and came home on Maggie Murphy's double, tying it up at 1-1 by the end of the fourth. Murphy's hot streak continued, as she logged at least two hits for the third game in a row.

In the fifth, RMU added two more to their tally. Thompson singled and scored on another hit from E. Facher, followed by Jardine who crossed home on Poulich's single, putting RMU ahead 3-1.

Oakland would storm back in the sixth, where the Golden Grizzlies took control. Plitz and Kam Troyer got things rolling with singles, and Murphy drove in Plitz with a shot to right. Murphy then scored on an error after a daring steal of second. Kayla Turmell chipped in with a sacrifice fly, bringing Murphy home. Autumn Liebhauser and Addison Caldwell kept the momentum going with singles, setting the stage for Brooklyn Wyczalek's double to left center, which drove in Liebhauser and Caldwell. By the end of the inning, Oakland was up 6-3.

With the lead in hand, the Golden Grizzlies held firm in the seventh. Kenna Bommarito slammed the door shut by striking out S. Dunlap, sealing the victory for Oakland. The final score: Oakland 6, RMU 3.

Kama Skrek pitched a solid 4 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs, while fanning a season-high four without issuing a walk. Bommarito took over in relief, tossing 2 2/3 scoreless innings with five strikeouts, stranding two inherited runners and keeping RMU from adding to their score despite six hits.

Plitz was a spark plug from the leadoff spot, scoring twice and collecting two hits. Murphy's two-hit day included a double and two RBIs, and she scored a run as well. Wyczalek chipped in with a crucial hit and two RBIs.
