Softball Jumps Out to Early Lead, But Falls Just Short to Wolverines

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies battled fiercely but fell short to the University of Michigan, 6-5, in a nail-biter at Hutchins Stadium. Oakland jumped out with a 3-0 lead right in the first inning, but the Wolverines clawed back with three runs in the sixth to clinch the win.

The Golden Grizzlies kicked things off in style, dominating the top of the first. Maggie Murphy smacked a single to left center, followed by Kayla Turmell drawing a walk. Autumn Liebhauser then roped a double down the left field line to drive in Murphy. Kenna Bommarito kept the momentum going with a single up the middle, bringing in two more and setting her season-high with 2 RBIs. By the inning's end, Oakland was up 3–2.

In the third, Oakland widened their lead by two more. Liebhauser walked, advanced to third on a fielder's choice, and a single from Brooklyn Wyczalek. Alexa Kownacki then laid down a perfect bunt, bringing Liebhauser home, and Addison Caldwell's fielder's choice tacked on another run, making it 5–3 for the Golden Grizzlies.

The sixth inning shifted the tide as the Wolverines launched a three-run homer to right center, courtesy of Lauren Putz, swinging the momentum and putting Michigan ahead 6–5, where it stayed until the final out.

Kenna Bommarito delivered a gutsy complete game with six strikeouts. She threw a season-high 124 pitches, with 76 finding the strike zone.

Autumn Liebhauser made her mark with two hits, including a double, two runs scored, and an RBI. Bommarito chipped in with two hits and two RBIs while handling pitching duties. Addison Caldwell added to the mix with a hit, a double, an RBI, and a stolen base. Taylor Carraway joined the party with a hit, scored a run, and an RBI.

Next up, the Golden Grizzlies will host Rochester Christian University on Tuesday, April 7, at 3 and 5 p.m., right at the Oakland Softball Field in Rochester, Michigan.
