ROCHESTER, Mich. - Senior Amy Golem turned in a double-double with 15 kills and 15 digs, while freshman Jenny Jones hit .478 with 12 kills, but it was not enough as the Oakland University volleyball team (4-14) was unable to catch up to Eastern Michigan's hot start in the fifth set, as the Eagles took a 3-2 victory over OU on Tuesday night at the Athletics Center O'Rena.
"I'm really pleased with our performance in this match," said head coach Rob Beam. "Obviously you'd like to get a win when you get into the fifth set. Everything is intensified and every kill and error means a little more. I think our teams were very even and the progress we've made since last year when we played Eastern Michigan was pretty remarkable."
In a back-and-forth match, OU fell 26-24 in the opening set but rallied to win 25-18 in the second set, knotting the match. EMU took the third set 25-16 before OU rallied behind a solid offensive performance, hitting .324 in a 26-24 win. However, EMU took the first three points in the final set en route to a 15-8 win in the decisive set.
Sophomore Katy Wilson dished out 29 assists while Samantha Filipek also tallied 17 assists. Golem tied with Brittany Dunn for the team lead with 15 digs, while Lauren Duquette tallied 13 digs. Freshman Jenna Lange had six kills with seven blocks (two solo, five assisted) and senior Leah Dupuie turned in an eight-kill effort with four block assists.
"I think what we needed to have was a great performance," said Beam. "You can talk about winning and losing but sometimes you just need to play really well and this was a good performance for our team. We out-blocked them and we out-dug them, and I think that when we go on the road for three matches in a row you look for a great performance. You let the result take care of itself and I feel really good taking this team on the road."
OU will open a three-match Summit League road trip this Friday at Centenary. A 7 p.m. start time is scheduled.
