(Sept. 16, 2006) ???C Oakland???s men???s soccer team opened Mid-Continent Conference play with an authoritative 4-1 win over visiting Centenary at Oakland Soccer Field this afternoon. The Golden Grizzlies improved their record to 2-5 overall (1-0 Mid-Con) while Centenary slipped to 1-6 (0-1 Mid-Con) on the year. Junior Adam Kliebert (Okemos, Mich.) registered his first goal of the season, sending a bullet from the top right corner of the box just inside the far post in the third minute to give Oakland the early 1-0 advantage. Senior Jim Denk (Park Ridge, Ill.) increased the lead to 2-0 in the 11th minute. Junior Nick Nelson (Vicksburg, Mich.) sent a cross pass from the right side to Denk, who tapped the ball into the open net for his first score this year. Freshman Stefan St. Louis (Chaguanas, Trinidad) potted his first of the season just 1:19 later, making a break up the middle with a defender on him and beating the Centenary keeper from 10 feet out. Nelson pushed the Oakland advantage to 4-0 in the 37th minute, sending a shot high that bounced off the keeper???s hands and just under the crossbar. Sophomore Piotr Nowak (Shelby Township, Mich.) garnered an assist on the play, sending a quick pass to Nelson in the box. Gentlemen forward Sam Robinson netted the lone Centenary goal in the 53rd minute, converting on a Brody Sager free kick. Sophomore keeper Steve Clark (Mason, Mich.) started for the Golden Grizzlies, stopping one shot in the win. He was relieved at the start of the second half by senior Josh Slaughter (Troy, Mich.), who made six saves. James Speed made nine stops for Centenary. The Golden Grizzlies travel to Ann Arbor Wednesday to take on Michigan at 7:00 p.m.
