Rochester, Mich. (Aug. 14, 2006) ???C Four members of Oakland???s men???s soccer team got a taste of what winning a national championship was like this past weekend, as the group were a part of a Michigan Bucks squad that defeated the Laredo (Texas) Heat, 2-1, for the Premier Development League championship. Senior
Brady Vance (Traverse City, Mich.), sophomores
Steve Clark (Mason, Mich.) and
Ian Daniel (Troy, Mich.) and freshman
Bret Mollon (Washington, Mich.), were all on hand in Texas as the Bucks captured their first-ever PDL title. In front of a crowd of 7,000 fans on Laredo???s home field, Michigan scored two quick goals in the opening minutes to take the early advantage. Laredo came back to get its goal in the 19th minute, but that would prove to be all the scoring that the two teams could produce. Battling both the Heat and a 25mph wind, the Bucks went on to capture the title. Clark, the starting goalkeeper for the Bucks, was named the championship game MVP as he made six saves in the second half to preserve his team???s 2-1 halftime advantage. All four players are now back in camp for Oakland as the squad prepares for its final exhibition tune-up of the season on Saturday against Kentucky at the OU Soccer Field. The Golden Grizzlies will host Coastal Carolina in its first match of the regular season on Friday, August 25 at 5:00 p.m.
