Box Score Rochester, Mich. (Oct. 14, 2006) ???C Oakland???s men???s soccer team jumped out to an early 1-0 lead but was unable to fight off the visiting Kangaroos as UMKC came back for a 2-1 victory at Oakland Soccer Field this afternoon. Sophomore
Wade Allen (Shelby Township, Mich.) registered the Golden Grizzly goal, his first of the season. Oakland (5-10, 2-3 Mid-Con) opened the game on the attack, rifling off three shots before Allen was successful in the 12th minute to give the Golden Grizzlies a 1-0 lead. A well-placed pass upfield to freshman
Stefan St. Louis (Chaguanas, Trinidad) on the left side gave Oakland a two-on-one advantage down low. St. Louis carried the ball into the box and as the UMKC (2-11-1, 2-3 Mid-Con) keeper came out to cut off the angle, St. Louis sent a pass to Allen in the middle, who then chipped the ball into the empty net. The Golden Grizzlies set up the offensive attack again and had a chance to go ahead in the 26th minute with three quick shots but were unable to convert. St. Louis fired from about 10 feet out on the right side, but keeper Brandom Amaya batted the ball out. It bounced straight to Allen, whose shot ricocheted off the crossbar to freshman
Sebastian Harris (Lake Orion, Mich.). Harris aimed for the far right post and fired just wide. Oakland???s offense created a few late scoring opportunities, but junior
Nick Nelson (Vicksburg, Mich.) and St. Louis were unable to find the mark, and junior
Lew Tripp???s (Whitmore Lake, Mich.) effort was turned aside by Amaya to keep the game 1-0 at intermission. Ryan Kaufman evened the game 1-1 for the Kangaroos with a successful penalty kick in the 52nd minute, faking a shot to the left and lifting the ball into the top right corner. Allen was awarded a penalty kick three minutes later, but Amaya made the diving save to keep the match knotted 1-1. The Kangaroos took their first lead of the game 2-1 in the 83rd minute as Kyle Perkins scored his third goal of the season off a nice pass by Joe Chirco. Oakland moved the ball upfield once again, setting up a good scoring chance for
Ian Daniel (Troy, Mich.) on the right, as the sophomore curled a shot through traffic toward the far left side of the cage, but a brilliant team save by a UMKC defender kept the Golden Grizzlies off the board. Harris had one last chance in the final minute of play, sending a shot through traffic in front from about 15 feet out, but Amaya knocked the ball up over the crossbar to preserve the 2-1 win for the Kangaroos. The Golden Grizzlies return to action Wednesday, hosting Ohio State in the final home game of the season at 4:00 p.m. at Oakland Soccer Field.
