Western Illinois Edges Oakland in Final Minute, 75-74

Box Score Rochester, Mich. (Feb. 23, 2005) ???C Oakland???s men???s basketball team saw a 14-point second half lead dwindle away in the final minutes of the game as Western Illinois came back to win on a shot by Fred Oguns with 10 seconds left that lifted the Leathernecks to a 75-74 win. DeMarcus Ishmeal (Detroit, Mich.) missed on a shot with just seconds left that would have won the game for OU. Rawle Marshall (Detroit, Mich.) led all scorers in the game with 25 points for the Golden Grizzlies. Western Illinois (9-16, 5-9 Mid-Con) got off to a good start when Troy Okeson came off the bench four minutes into the game and sank back-to-back three-point shots that gave the Leathernecks a 14-8 lead. Oakland (7-18, 5-9 Mid-Con) fought its way back into the contest, holding WIU to just a pair of free throws over a three-minute span while the Golden Grizzlies reeled off 11 points of their own, taking a 19-18 lead on a dunk by Cortney Scott (Lansing, Mich.) at the 10:14 mark. From that point on the game remained close, with three ties and six lead changes over the rest of the half. With the game tied at 33-all with two minutes left, Oakland had the final say, out scoring Western 7-0 the rest of the way. Marshall came up with six of the points that gave Oakland a 40-33 edge at the half. A Patrick McCloskey (Marshall, Mich.) lay-up two minutes into the second half put Oakland up by 11 at 48-37. Western Illinois, which hit 22 of 24 free throws to just 10-of-12 for Oakland in the game, managed to keep the score from getting too far away by hitting charity shots early on in the half. Still, the Golden Grizzlies managed to keep their lead in double figures for most of the first 10 minutes of the half and took their largest lead of the night on a Brandon Cassise (Walled Lake, Mich.) jumper that made it 65-51 with 11:13 to go. David Carson (Merillville, Ind.) hit a three-point shot with 8:17 to play that had OU up 70-59, but that turned out to be the last basket for Oakland until the final minute of the game. The Golden Grizzlies wound up going over six minutes without scoring, and Western Illinois capitalized by scoring 10 straight points to cut the lead to one on a lay-up by Eliz Cepeda with 3:36 left. After both teams turned the ball over, Oakland head coach Greg Kampe was called for a technical foul and Okeson canned both of the resulting free throws that put WIU back on top. The Leathernecks got it up to a three-point lead, but Oakland got a pair of free throws from Scott and then Marshall hit a lay-up after a WIU turnover that put the Golden Grizzlies back up by one with 30 second left to play. On Western???s next possession David Jackson missed his attempt to put his team back on top, but Oguns managed to grab the rebound and lay it back in for what turned out to be the winning shot. Scott added 22 points and eight rebounds for Oakland, with Cassise coming off the bench to add 16, including hitting 4-of-7 three-point attempts. Western Illinois had five players in double figures, led by Okeson???s 19. Eulis Baez added 16 points and six rebounds for the Leathernecks. Both teams shot the ball well, with WIU holding a 53.1 percent to 51.9 percent edge.
